Gordon Cheung’s neon sci-fi landscape imagines a world suffering diminished natural resources as a result of human greed. The ‘Dawn of Man’ sequence from Stanley Kubrick’s landmark film 2001: A Space Odyssey, in which man-apes learn to acquire resources through violence and conquest, informs Cheung’s portrayal of The Promised Land. His multi-media work, created atop the stock exchange pages of the Financial Times, foretells the dangers of acquisition through violence, and the folly of pursuing paradise at nature’s expense via global economics, ubiquitous information systems, and advanced technology. Cheung seems to suggest that a wasteland dominated by lifeless trees, rather than heaven, awaits human civilisations driven by avarice and the numbers of the world’s financial markets.
