Jacco Olivier creates his animations through a process of painting, re-painting, and photographing each stage of the work’s development. Turning Point presents a familiar emblem of declining sea ice through unexpectedly dazzling images. A lone polar bear fruitlessly searches for food above and below the sea. He dives deeper into murkier water, seemingly losing a fish at one point, a poignant reminder of these Arctic creatures’ diminishing food supply. Bird, too, seems to suggest the struggle to locate food, this time from the aerial perspective of a vibrantly hued, chameleon-like parrot. More ambiguously, Wood’s icy landscape seems to reach its own turning point. We hear sounds and see images of disruption – the felling of a tree, the pumping of an oil derrick – as well as the birdsong that heralds spring and renewal.
