Austrian artist Erwin Wurm’s 2013 performance enacts the destructive potential of man’s footprint upon the earth. The film of the performance opens with a woman and two men walking, kicking, and stomping on clay models of buildings modelled on existing examples of American and European architecture. Eventually, others join in, their actions and the weight of their bodies contributing to the buildings’ destruction. Seen within the context of Vita Vitale, Wurm’s film takes on a less playful note, and seems to emphasise our capacity to destroy our own habitat, our home, the place from which we seek both shelter and conviviality.
